Beneath your brows, they gaze at me without even blinking. Enchanting woman of M\u00e1laga, how beautiful you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are lines from <em>La Malague\u00f1a<\/em>, a song that celebrates the beauty of the women of M\u00e1laga, a port city in Andalusia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With their dark hair and dark eyes, many local women seem to embody the classic image of passionate Spanish beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along Spain\u2019s southern Mediterranean coast lies the Costa del Sol, or \u201cCoast of the Sun,\u201d one of the country\u2019s most scenic and internationally known resort areas. Visitors come here from around the world to enjoy its beaches, sunshine, and relaxed atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main gateway to the region is M\u00e1laga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sometimes wonder whether the intense sunlight and open, easygoing character of this place may have influenced the work of the great artist who was born here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25c7\u3000\u3000\u3000\u25c7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From M\u00e1laga, I boarded a bus and headed west, watching glimpses of the coastline and palm trees appear between the buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two hours later, we arrived at the hillside village of Mijas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though it was November, the sunlight was dazzling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Narrow streets were lined with two-story whitewashed houses, many with caf\u00e9s and souvenir shops on the ground floor. Parasols opened over balconies, creating the unmistakable atmosphere of a southern European resort town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flowerpots hanging from the white walls seemed to welcome every visitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step into the backstreets, however, and the crowds quickly disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a second-floor window, an elderly woman with white hair quietly looked down at the street below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seeing the contrast between the lively tourist area and the simple everyday life just behind it reminded me of my hometown, Okinawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, I reached a viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far beyond the horizon, I could just make out the coast of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeyond the Pyrenees lies Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those words, often attributed to Napoleon in reference to Spain, came to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across this sea, people and cultures from many different lands have arrived over the centuries, leaving their mark on Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1706\" height=\"1386\" src=\"https:\/\/pantech.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4e19e97eef7e58170045aa230e74d6a9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pantech.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4e19e97eef7e58170045aa230e74d6a9.jpg 1706w, https:\/\/pantech.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4e19e97eef7e58170045aa230e74d6a9-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pantech.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4e19e97eef7e58170045aa230e74d6a9-1024x832.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pantech.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4e19e97eef7e58170045aa230e74d6a9-768x624.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pantech.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4e19e97eef7e58170045aa230e74d6a9-1536x1248.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1706px) 100vw, 1706px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Casares, a small hilltop village, with the remains of an ancient Roman fortress and an old church visible at the summit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Across the Fields and Along the Cliffs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no bus from there to my destination, Ronda, so I hailed a taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The driver, a heavily bearded man in his forties, took my suitcase, but it was too large for the trunk to close. He shook his head, so I pulled out the rope I always carry when traveling and tied the trunk lid down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay, let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way, we stopped in a small village called Casares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long ago, the village was built high in the rugged hills as a place of refuge from religious conflict. Even today, its whitewashed houses seem to huddle closely together, as if supporting one another, while people continue to live there much as they have for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The taxi kept climbing deeper into the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At times we drove through olive groves, and at others along roads perched above steep cliffs. There were few cars, and hardly another person in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ronda, the city built along dramatic cliffs, still seemed far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As dusk settled over the reddish mountains, I began to feel uneasy, wondering for a moment where exactly I was being taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time we finally reached Ronda, night had fallen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expecting to be overcharged, I asked the driver how much I owed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he pulled out the official fare chart and carefully explained the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything was completely straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sorry for doubting you\u2014and gracias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25c7\u3000\u3000\u3000\u25c7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ronda\u2019s history stretches back to ancient times. Built above a deep gorge, the city has passed through Roman, Islamic, and Christian eras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Puente Nuevo, which connects the old and new parts of the city, rises about 100 meters above the gorge and is one of Ronda\u2019s most impressive landmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Okinawan painter I have known for many years fell in love with this view and has returned several times to paint the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ronda is also home to one of Spain\u2019s oldest surviving bullrings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a small restaurant near the bullring, I once had foie gras with blueberry sauce.
